Although the symptoms of depression vary each relationship, this is the most common difficulty I hear about and the one I experienced.

What is the inner agony that you can’t seem to face and deal with? Reciting the standard list of depression symptoms and their potential impacts on daily life can only get you so far. Lists that are too broad don’t capture the essence of the experience.

Talking about “inner anguish” conjures up images of despair or other intolerable suffering that begs for an explanation and must be averted as soon as possible. Because depression is a disorder that might change from day to day, the active side of pain can be the motivator.

However, there is another aspect of despair that might lead to the notion of escape as a solution.

It’s the one that leads sad couples to declare that they’re no longer in love with their partners and that they’ve never loved them.

It was a type of death for me. The underlying of all the surface commotion was the lack of pain, the lack of feeling, rather than an excess of terrible emotion.

I was under the impression that my relationship was holding me back. It had become hollow, devoid of the ferocity I craved.

Only with someone else could I find happiness and passion. The fantasy of having the perfect passionate mate was a persistent draw.

I recently re-read a chapter in Peter Kramer’s excellent book, Should You Leave?, that perfectly conveyed this.

When he meets someone who believes their marriage is over, he immediately assumes depression or another mood condition.

He senses that the guy in front of him may be suffering from an untreated depression that has robbed him of any emotion. Anhedonia is the urge to leave in search of a new, more intense existence. Because he can’t feel anything, his relationship feels loveless.

The problem is that the unconscious depressive has such a high emotional threshold that considerable stimulation is required to elicit enthusiasm and passion. Because these are more intense feelings that stir him like nothing else, he can erupt in hatred and anger.

These individuals, according to Kramer, typically assume that they are completely capable of experiencing. They can, after all, go out and have a good time with their buddies. They can feel passionate when they’re with people who aren’t in any kind of relationship or who are looking for the same kind of release.

However, if you find yourself thinking about future trips, relocations, or jobs without picturing your SO accompanying you, your relationship may not be suited for the long haul. “You are a unit in a loving partnership, and the future includes the two of you together,” DeAlto says. “There’s an issue if someone starts making plans as a ‘I’ rather than a ‘we.'”

Although it is sometimes stated that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance, this figure of speech does not adequately convey the disease’s complexity. According to research, depression isn’t caused by having too much or too little of particular brain chemicals. Depressive disorders can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor mood regulation by the brain, genetic predisposition, stressful life events, drugs, and medical issues. It’s thought that several of these factors work together to cause depression.

Sure, chemicals play a role in this process, but it’s not as easy as one molecule being too low and another being too high. Rather, a slew of molecules are at action, both inside and outside nerve cells.
