Nobody enjoys being in an uncomfortable situation. Nobody enjoys being in an awkward situation. Nobody enjoys putting themselves in a situation where they might be dismissed or undermined. Instead, we blame ourselves, make excuses for our relationship, and lie to ourselves and our partner in order to disregard red indicators. We prefer consistency and despise upsetting the status quo, but communication is essential, and a lack of communication is the key to your heart’s lock. It’s critical to talk to your partner about anything that bothers you, especially red flags in your relationship.

Here are some approaches to addressing your problems with your partner in a kind manner.

1. Don’t assign responsibility.

“Now we’re late because you’re taking too long to get ready,” for example. “You should have done the dishes yesterday, so they’re building up.” “You were supposed to call yesterday night but never did, so it’s your fault I didn’t text you today.”

Blaming implies that someone is to blame for something negative that has happened. Acknowledging the problem with a question is a smart way to demonstrate that you’re not fine, but you’re not blaming anyone. Do you see the distinction? If they don’t respond with care, let them know you wouldn’t have brought it up if it wasn’t important to you, so they may, for example, get dressed an hour earlier, wash the dishes sooner, apologize in the morning, or, better still, keep their word.

2. Avoid making blanket claims (e.g., “always” or “never”).

“You usually take too long to get ready,” for example. “You never clean up after yourselves.” “You never call when you say you’ll call.”

That’s a lot of fighting words! While your partner may have a pattern of doing these things, using words like “always” and “never” puts them on the defensive, which quickly turns into an attack, with another always/never statement directed at you. We are arrogant people, and it shows in our relationships when we get defensive and defend ourselves by blaming others. As a result, not only will such a statement be painful, but it will also be counterproductive to the initial issue.

“I know I’m rushing you right now,” says the narrator, “but would it help if I reminded you to get dressed an hour sooner next time?” “I know you despise doing the dishes, but there isn’t a big pile when you wash them every time you use them.” “I understand you neglected to call me, but I don’t want this to become a pattern.” It’s critical to me that you remember or don’t raise my expectations in the first place.”

If you’re going to recommend something, make sure it seems like a suggestion, which means you shouldn’t use the word “should.” This reads more like a demand or a verdict. Wouldn’t it be awful to be told what you “should” have done, as if you irritated them on purpose?
